Olive oil benefits health in so many ways, that we really can’t ignore this wonder oil. It contains a wide variety of valuable antioxidants that are not found in other oils. Hydroxytyrosol is thought to be the main antioxidant compound in olives, and believed to play a significant role in the many health benefits attributed to olive oil.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil also contain high amounts of essential fatty acid (EFA) called Omega-3, which is essential for your heart health.

Extra virgin Olive Oil has been used for centuries in the Mediterranean countries as part of their diet, and it is well recorded what benefits they derived from that.

There are unfortunately many inferior olive oil products available in the supermarkets, so you have to check that you are buying a good quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil that has been cold pressed.

Because of its content of oleic acid, and antioxidants, polyphenols, sterols and vitamins, a good olive oil can help to prevent diseases such as:


Epidemiological studies suggest that olive oil has a protective effect against
certain malignant tumors
in the breast, prostate, endometrium and digestive tract. Certain constituents of extra virgin olive oil reduce oxidation damage to DNA. Its anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories may slow the development of cancer, and encourage self-destruction of cancer cells.

Coronary Heart Disease

Coronary artery disease begins when high blood pressure, and an unhealthy lifestyle like smoking, high blood-fat or blood-sugar levels damage the arteries’ linings and make it leak. When a higher proportion of Monounsaturated fats are included in the diet, which is contained in extra virgin olive oil, in the form of oleic acid, it can lead to a reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease, as it discourages oxidation, inflammation and high blood pressure.

When also following the Meditteranean Diet, and including 4 Tablespoons of EVOO daily, you could reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease dramatically.



Olive oil’s high levels of natural antioxidants, which serves to scavenge and detoxify harmful free radicals in our body, serves to protect us from degenerative diseases, such as cardiovascular and circulatory diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, skin diseases, obesity, high blood pressure and premature ageing.


Studies suggest that antioxidant found in olive oil, prevents this clouding of the eye’s lens.


Skin health starts from the inside, and by including EVOO in your diet, you can improve the general health and appearance of your skin, through the consumption of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which is found in EVOO. There are strong anti-bacterial properties in these essential fatty acids.

Anti-inflammatories such as sqeualine and other antioxidants in olive oil may also help in healing eczema when applied to the skin.

Extra Virgin Olive oil’s anti-inflammatory antioxidants counter oxidation and inflammation, which is a contributing factor in Alzheimer’s, as this destroys brain cells. Its monoansaturated fats also helps to keep brain-cell membranes healthy.


Olive oil can help to cure acne because of it’s anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. By applying olive oil to the skin twice a day, and consuming 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil daily, your acne should clear up.


Asthma is a result of inflammation and over sensitivity of the airways, and when consuming olive oil on a daily basis, it could assist in lowering the rate, because of monoansaturated fats, oleocanthal and other anti-inflammatories. The quercetin in olive oil also acts as an antihistamine.

      EVOO is just one of the most amazing health products there are! I eat it with everything, and find the best way to get the daily dose is to have it with fresh bread. I just dip it in the olive oil and balsamic, tastes lovely!

  2. I love olive oil. I do notice cooking with it is not ideal. It’s best in its raw form. I’ve even done cleanses where I have to mix it with grapefruit juice and drink it. The olive oil taste was quite pleasant and my gallbladder got cleansed in the process!

      Olive oil is ideal for frying. In proper temperature conditions, without over-heating, it undergoes no substantial structural change and keeps its nutritional value better than other oils, not only because of the antioxidants but also due to its high levels of oleic acid.

  3. Hi Mariette, I think the only thing you mentioned that I knew about EVOO was using it on salads. A lot of useful information and you have my interest in using EVOO as a natural type preventive. I smoke, with a lifetime of fairly poor diet habits, but as I get older, I am finding myself looking for natural ways to improve my odds. 4 tablespoons added to the natural herbs I already do won’t be too hard.

  4. Ohhhhh I have heard some benefits of using Extra Virgin Olive Oil, but I didn’t realize there where so many. I had heard of it being a natural moisturizer and have been too scared to use it as a hair mask, do you know how much a should use? A teaspoon?? A dessert spoon? Or just go for it and see what works for me?

      You can use as much as needed, depending on your hair length, but 1 tablespoon should do it. I just warm it up before I apply it. Just massage it into your hair, and leave on as long as possible, if you can sleep with it on overnight, even better! You will see the difference it makes!

  7. Olive oil is also really good for hair. Sometimes I put olive oil on my hair and wrap it with a plastic conditioning cap and an old t-shirt the night before I shampoo my hair the results are soft, manageable and super shiny hair.

As you state there are many health benefits. I am living those health results. First of all, I have lost over 60 pounds but more importantly, I am in perfect health. Love my good fats like olive oil.
